Field Trip

What their garden looks like as we enter
Welcome To SOIL FOR LIFE

Tyre Planters that Group (D) made
Window garden that Group (D) built

In order to gain knowledge on how to build window gardens, we set out to Soil For Life in Constantia. They are a self sustaining garden that rely on donated or recyclable materials. From there, we were split up into groups. Suleiman, Alex, Berkeley and I were split up into groups: A,B,C and D respectively. We were then asked to answer questions based on our experiences.

What did I learn that I did not know before?

Suleiman (B):   HOW TO SAVE WATER AND STILL GET THE SAME OUTCOME AS THE RESULT AND THAT THERE IS OTHER ORGANISMS HELPING THE PLANT TO GROW.

Chris (D): I definitely felt interested because we got to build window gardens out of wood and paint them ourselves. It was loads of fun and took us out of our natural habitat and made us more aware.

Berkeley (A): I learned how to make compost and how to make a worm farm.

How will what I learnt help me with my window garden?

Suleiman (B): IT WILL HELP ME WITH CONSERVING WATER AND HOW OTHER ORGANISM CAN PRODUCE SUBSTANTIAL FOOD FOR YOUR PLANT AS WELL.

Chris (D): It will help me design our window garden and look at what materials we can use and how to build one as well as what type of plants we must use.

Berkeley (A): Making the compost will help me understand how important soil is for growing.

How did I feel? Excited/ Bored/ Interested?

Suleiman (B): I FELT INTERESTED BECAUSE I DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT SOME OF THESE THINGS AND IT HELPED ME GET OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE.

Chris (D): I definitely felt interested because we got to build window gardens out of wood and paint them ourselves. It was loads of fun and took us out of our natural habitat and made us more aware.

Berkeley (A): It was quite boring at the start but when I finally realized how important it was, I was very interested in what we were doing.
