DIY Window Garden

Our ambitious window garden did not succeed the way we would have liked it to so we decided to build a new one with a simpler design. The wood could not support the weight of the three planting beds and had started to crack down the middle. We ditched the wooden design and went with plastic bottles. Simple but effective. Our plants did not get the sunlight it needed hence the reason why our tomato plant almost died and two of our basil plants shriveled up. We also needed to change our soil to filtration ratio as the water would turn out muddy or wouldn't come through at all.

I do think we chose the right plants for our window garden as they were compact and used little water. It seemed that the tomatoes have begun to ripen and the basil, parsley and chives are almost ready to harvest.

We are planning on finishing our new Window Garden before the next term starts so hopefully our plants will survive the week-or-so break. We predict that more than one tomato will ripen, the parsley, chives and basil will be ready to harvest.

Reflections:

Suleiman: This window garden project has taught me many lessons like saving water and recycling old materials. This made me think that it’s not hard to build a window garden. You need not new materials as it’s very simple and easy. I think that this also gave me a chance to work with people I haven’t worked with before.

Berkeley:  I have learned quite a lot from making my window garden, I learned that window gardens are a quick and easy way to grow our food. It has been a lot of fun so far seeing how our plants have grown, I especially like watering the plants at the start of each Biology lesson.

Chris: I have learnt that building a window garden is not as easy as people think. I thoroughly enjoyed this project. Growing your own food is feels satisfying and rewarding. This project has helped me with my people skills as I have worked with people that I wouldn't have normally.
